They always help the weak and uphold justice. However, not all of them appear physically perfect.

There are a number of superheroes from the Marvel world who appear physically imperfect. There are those who experience hearing loss or are deaf, speech impaired, blind, lose one of their limbs or are even paralyzed and have to sit in a wheelchair. However, these shortcomings do not prevent them from doing good.

Their strength is no less than the others. Some have been tested, but some are new to be introduced.

This list only features superhero characters with disabilities who are still alive. So Tony Stark who had a heart problem and Odin were not included because they were gone. So who are they? Here’s the review!

10. Maya Lopez/Echo

Episode 2 of the Hawkeye series that aired on Disney+ Hotstar offered a glimpse of Maya Lopez. Played by Alaqua Cox, Maya will later incarnate as a superhero named Echo. It is not yet known what the action will be in the MCU. What is clear, the actor, Alaqua, is also a deaf like Maya.

9. Nick Fury

This super spy from SHIELD was introduced since Iron Man (2008) with his trademark appearance. Unlike in the comics, the MCU explains that Nick lost his eye due to the scratch of a cat named Goose in Captain Marvel (2019). The cat that scratched him was not a random cat. He is the embodiment of aliens.

Despite losing one eye, Nick still looks fierce. He did not see his shortcomings as an obstacle for him to uncover crimes.

8. Clint Barton/Hawkeye

In the comics, Clint Barton is a deaf superhero. However, this aspect didn’t exist in the MCU until the Hawkeye series premiered on Disney+ Hotstar. In episode 1 of the series, Clint is seen wearing a hearing aid in his left ear. This indicates that Hawkeye has lost his hearing.

It has not been explicitly explained why Clint lost his hearing in the MCU. However, the cause of Clint’s hearing loss is known as noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), which can often be followed by extreme tinnitus. This can happen to ex-soldiers who repeatedly act without ear protection. Clint’s hearing loss, as quoted from Screen Rant, is the result of the impact of accumulated trauma.

7. Bucky Barnes

When he first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger , Bucky Barnes appeared physically intact. However, in the film, he then falls off the train. As a result, he lost his left arm. The arm had to be amputated. Hydra replaced his hand with their artificial prosthetic arm.

At the end of Captain America: Civil War , Bucky removed the Hydra’s prosthetic arm while in Wakanda. In the post-credits scene of Black Panther , he then gets a new prosthetic arm made by the reclusive kingdom. The new, state-of-the-art prosthetic arm helps Bucky get the most out of his action.

6. Wade Wilson/Deadpool

Before becoming Deadpool, Wade Wilson was a mercenary. He was later diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. His quest for treatment makes him the subject of a dangerous experiment. As a result of the experiment, he became physically deformed and experienced excruciating pain.

However, the experiment also gave him extraordinary abilities. He could heal himself in no time. However, when that ability is suppressed or removed as seen in Deadpool 2 , Wade will become weak. The cancer she had was hurting her and she couldn’t do anything about it.

5. Doctor Strange

In Doctor Strange (2016), Stephen Strange gets into a car accident that leaves him seriously injured. As a result, he lost the ability in his hands. In fact, as a surgeon, those hands are everything to him.

In order to return to being a surgeon, Stephen goes to the Taj Chamber. He met the Ancient One. Instead of healing his hands, he studied magic and eventually became the Great Magician. The injury on his hand is also not 100% healed. This was seen in Avengers: Endgame . When he raised his finger to signal Iron Man, it was still shaking. This indicates that even magic has not been able to heal the wound.

4. Matt Murdock/Daredevil

Daredevil went blind when he was a child. This gives him abilities up to superhuman level. In the film world, this character has been played by two actors, namely Ben Affleck in the 2003 film and Charlie Cox in the Netflix series.

Like many visually impaired people, Matt uses sound as a method of orientation and navigation. He read the printed words with his finger and could sense disturbances in the air when people walked or teleported nearby. He is trained by his mentor who is also blind, Stick. This means, he is already quite dangerous with his stick.

3. Makkari

Introduced in the Eternals movie , the MCU version of Makkari is different from the comic version. In the comics, Makkari is a man. While in the MCU, Makkari is a woman who is deaf and speech impaired. The actress who plays, Lauren Ridloff, is indeed a person with a disability in the real world. In the world of superhero movies, Makkari is the first deaf hero ever to be shown.

Makkari’s most outstanding strength is her speed. Throughout his life, he spent time improving his speed. In the film, Makkari lives on Domo’s ship and collects many artifacts. He also likes to read books. He can read books very fast.

2. Professor X

Charles Xavier aka Professor X is one of the most powerful mutants in the Marvel universe. He is also a globally respected scientific expert in genetics. He plays an important role as an ambassador in promoting peaceful relations between humans and mutants. In the film, he has been played by two people, namely Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy.

Professor X is probably the first disabled superhero that comes to mind. He has paralysis in his legs due to Magneto’s actions. In X-Men: First Class , it was shown that Professor X was paralyzed after Magneto deflected a bullet. Inadvertently, the bullet broke his spine.

1. Thor

Thor is one of the strongest heroes ever in the Marvel universe. He was almost invincible. As the God of Lightning, he is very strong and has a mainstay weapon in the form of a hammer called Mjolnir. In the MCU, everything was going well until Thor: Ragnarok (2017) when Thor faced off against his older sister, Hela.

In a fight, Hela blinds one of Thor’s eyes. Even so, the condition did not make Thor discouraged. He continues to appear as a hero. He later met Rocket in Avengers: Infinity War who gave him a fake eye. Thor currently has two eyes. However, one of them is blind, like his late father, Odin.
