Story ideas for making movies can come from anywhere, including from games. Hollywood itself has been making live action films adapted from games since 1993, starting with the Super Mario Bros. film. (1993). Even though Super Mario Bros. experienced failure when it was released, various Hollywood film studios still don’t stop making live action game films to this day.
The number of live action game films is indeed increasing. Unfortunately, most of the live action game films end up failing and disappointing game fans. As the title suggests, this film is adapted from the game Detective Pikachu which was released exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS.
Detective Pikachu is about Tim Goodman, who quits as a Pokemon trainer after the death of his mother. In addition, his father also suddenly disappeared. One day, Tim meets a talking Pikachu. Uniquely, only Tim could hear the Pikachu speak. Tim and Pikachu then work together to solve the mystery of Tim’s father’s disappearance.
2. Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
Before cinemas closed due to the pandemic, Paramount Pictures still had time to release the film Sonic the Hedgehog . From the title, you immediately know that this film is an adaptation of the game Sonic the Hedgehog released by Sega. This film even stars the legendary actor Jim Carrey who plays Dr. Robotics.
3. Mortal Kombat (2021)
New Line Cinema first made a live-action Mortal Kombat film in 1995. The film was a success. Unfortunately, the sequel, entitled Mortal Kombat: Annihilation , failed miserably. The failure of Annihilation made New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. only dared to release the Mortal Kombat reboot film 24 years later. Interestingly, Indonesian actor Joe Taslim plays the role of Sub-Zero in this film.
Mortal Kombat focuses on the story of Cole Young, a new character created especially for this film. Cole, who doesn’t know about the origins of his grandparents, is suddenly hunted by Sub-Zero. Disney has also released a live action game film entitled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time . For information, this film is adapted from the game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time released by Ubisoft. Not only adapting from one game, this film also takes elements from the games Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones .
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time tells the story of Dastan, the adopted son of the king of Persia. One day, Dastan gets a dagger that gives him access to the Sands of Time , a device that can turn back time. Dastan who is accused of murdering his father then tries to unmask the real killer.
5. Uncharted (2022)
Uncharted is the latest live action game film to be released in 2022. Just two months after appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Tom Holland is back in action as Nathan Drake in Uncharted . Not only Holland, Uncharted also stars other big actors, namely Mark Wahlberg and Antonio Banderas.
Uncharted tells the story of a bartender named Nathan Drake. One day, a mysterious man named Victor “Sully” Sullivan invites Nathan to hunt for treasure left behind from Magellan’s expedition. Nathan was hesitant at first, but eventually joined because Sully said that Nathan could meet his brother.
