Arsenal decided to release Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the January transfer window. The decision won praise from former Gunners player Alan Smith.

Aubameyang committed a disciplinary violation that made Mikel Arteta furious. The Gabon player then had to lose the captain’s armband and was suspended from the Gunners squad.

At its peak, Arsenal released Aubameyang in the transfer market this winter. Because it was not sold, Aubameyang’s contract was terminated so that the player could leave the club.

Aubameyang then moved to Barcelona. The Spanish giants signed the former Borussia Dortmund player for free.

Arsenal Have Learned
Alan Smith praised Arsenal’s move to quickly release Aubameyang in the transfer market. According to him, the Gunners have learned from previous mistakes.

“I think this transfer window shows that Arsenal are learning from past mistakes,” Smith wrote in his Sky Sports column .

He finally worked it out and I said before, it’s very easy to be lured into signing and keeping the best players, at that time, with big salaries.

“You never know how a player will react after that and whether he will continue to do well.

Don’t Buy Players
After releasing Aubameyang, Arsenal did not bring in new players to increase the strength of their squad. Smith thinks the Gunners are better off buying players next summer.

“There’s nothing worse than panic buying in football. So much goes into transfers and I wouldn’t mind betting that Arsenal have a target or two at least for the summer.
