After achieving success through Bridesmaids (Paul Feig, 2011) – which is not only a commercial success on a large scale during the period of release but also managed to produce nominated for Best Original Screenplay of the event The 84 th Annual Academy Awards and is now regarded as one of the best comedy of all time – actress and screenwriter duo, Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo , back working for Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar . Do not rush to expect this film to follow the golden formula that has been successfully implemented by Bridesmaids . If Bridesmaidsis a drama about friendship between two women presented with a comedy wrap, then Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar presents comedic elements of a story about friendship between two women as a whole with a number of touches of romance (and musical) in some parts of the story. It’s comical, and often feels like a lengthy sketch comedy, but Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar definitely makes for an entertaining presentation.
The feature-length film directorial debut for director Josh Greenbaum , Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar tells the story of two middle-aged women, Barb (Mumolo) and Star (Wiig), who are best friends but have just been laid off from their jobs. Not wanting to be sad for too long, the two of them then chose to take a vacation to a beach resort called Vista Del Mar in the Florida area. Unexpectedly, the vacation visit brought them together with a handsome man named Edgar Paget ( Jamie Dornan).) which immediately stole the hearts of the two. They both like Edgar Paget, Barb and Star who don’t want their friendship to be broken and chooses to keep their feelings from one another. At the same time, Edgar Paget turns out to have a secret mission that he is running. A mission that not only endangers Barb and Star, but also endangers many people who are in the vicinity of the Vista Del Mar area.
It’s not a surprise to see Mumolo and Wiig – who in this film play two characters at once – able to come up with a variety of their silly antics. As the characters Barb and Star, both of them appear with chemistryso warm and reassuring. Wiig’s appearance as an antagonist named Sharon Gordon Fisherman also did not disappoint. It’s funny with the memorable characterization as a parody of the cruel antagonist characters that can be found in many Hollywood films but processed by extracting Wiig’s story and appearance which is quite impressive. Dornan also gave an appearance that was able to match the appearance of the two main actresses of this film. In fact, on many occasions, Dornan was able to capture the attention of the powerful features in highlighting the ability of comedy (and sings in several musical scenes) that makes its presence felt to be so refreshing for the flow of narration Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar . Definitely one of Dornan’s best acting performances.
Apart from Wiig and Mumolo, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Michael Hitchcock, who previously filled the acting department of Bridesmaids, also return to act in this film – although in roles that are not so crucial. Indeed, the storyline of Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar comes with a complete focus on the development of the storyline of the characters played by Wiig, Mumolo, and Dornan. However, a number of supporting appearances from Damon Wayans Jr. , Vanessa Bayer , Phyllis Smith , and Reyn Doican provide a number of impetus to the comedic moments in the storytelling timeline that makes this film interesting to continue to follow. Don’t miss out on performances by Andy García , Reba McEntire , and Morgan Freeman ( not really … but Josh Robert Thompson imitating Freeman’s voice with a very real feel) which is short but will be able to provoke laughter.
The comical appearance of the acting department of Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar is indeed the key to the success of this film in providing entertainment to the audience. But what about the narrative of Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar which often feels like a unit of a number of comedy sketches that have the same storytelling theme? Well … it must be admitted that the choice of comedy presented by Wiig and Mumolo in this film does feel a little absurd . In addition to often presenting musical scenes in several parts of the story, Wiig and Mumolo also do not hesitate to use a number of jokes that seem wild and make no sense. Cartoonish. Not a big problem actually, but some elements of the comedy will definitely trap some viewers who are not used to the comedy tone. Despite some of these quirks, Greenbaum was able to provide the right direction to keep Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar still present with the right story rhythm and artistic choices that make this comedy film able to appear so lively and fun.
