Horror and Thriller Movies on HBO GO Adapted from Novels

Nowadays people have no trouble finding movies to watch when they want to have a relaxing time. There are many subscription streaming services to choose from. One of them is HBO GO. This streaming service provided by HBO offers many movies of various genres.

Of the many films on HBO GO, here are six horror and thriller films adapted from novels. All get a rating above 50 percent on Rotten Tomatoes , you know!

Pet Sematary (1989)
Pet Sematary tells the story of Louis Creed (Dale Midkiff) and his family who have just moved to a new city due to work demands. He and his family live in a house adjacent to a pet cemetery called Pet Sematary.

Initially, their life went well until their youngest child, Gage Creed (Miko Gughes) died. Not only that, Louis also learned a surprising fact about the cemetery complex not far from his house.

Deep in the forest where Pet Sematary is located, there is a sacred burial ground that revives the dead. Overwhelmed with guilt, Louis brought his son’s body to be buried in the cemetery and even added new problems. Gage came back to life as an evil monster.

Pet Sematary is adapted from the novel of the same name written by Stephen King. The novel, which was published in 1983, has so far been adapted into films, released in 1989 and 2019. However, on HBO GO you can only find the 1989 version of Pet Sematary .

The Town (2010)
The Town was inspired by the novel titled “Prince of Thieves” written by Chuck Hogan. Published in 2004, the novel was adapted into a film in September 2010. The Town managed to get a positive response from critics. The film received a 92 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Town tells the story of the lives of young men from Charlestown who work as robbers. They work under the control of a mafia boss who the FBI has long targeted.

The robbery mission carried out by the youths goes smoothly until one of them, Doug Macray (Ben Affleck), intends to stop. He becomes more confident in his choice after meeting Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall), the assistant manager who they had taken hostage during a bank robbery mission.

Doug’s decision was opposed by many, including the mafia boss where he worked. The boss threatens to kill Claire and Doug’s family if he doesn’t carry out the next robbery mission. On the other hand, Claire was threatened by the FBI that she would be prosecuted as an accomplice to the mafia if she did not cooperate with them.

This crime thriller genre film is filled with shooting scenes and chases with members of the apparatus experienced by the characters. In addition, this film is also slightly spiced with the romance between Doug and Claire who are in a difficult position.

Unknown (2011)
Unknown is adapted from the French novel ” Out of My Head” written by Didier Van Cauwelaert. This novel was first published in 2003 before finally being adapted to the big screen in 2011.

This psychological thriller genre film tells the story of Dr. Martin Harris (Liam Neeson) who is suddenly unknown to those around him after waking up from a coma due to an accident. He who was supposed to attend an international meeting tried to uncover the strangeness that occurred. In the midst of trying to restore his identity, he is also chased by someone who suddenly wants to kill him.
