When superhero -themed films began to appear in the early 2000s, it was the dream of superhero comics fans to one day see their superheroes gathered in one film. It’s true that X-Men and Fantastic Four started to present many superheroes in one film, but it was only the Marvel Cinematic Universe with The Avengers that really made that dream come true. Seeing the success of their colleagues, DC Comics also did not want to lose and issued the DC Extended Universe . Although only 3 films are included in the DCEU (let’s just say Suicide Squadnot including, despite winning an Oscar), did not prevent them from collecting their superhero heroes in one film.
Unfortunately, this Justice League is yet another proof that DC is in a hurry to introduce its universe . The beginning of this film feels very paced and the story is not easy to follow. The introduction of what Mother Box is , who is Steppenwolf, who is Darkseid and what is his relationship with Steppenwolf to Earth is not explained smoothly and this information is quite difficult to digest by those who are not readers of DC comics. Evidently 2 people on my right and left look confused and often ask “what does that mean?”. The recruitment of Justice League members other than Batman and Wonder Woman is also a bit long because it also gives a little origin story each, but because this part is pretty cool, I’m not complaining.
In addition to its universe , which has lost a step compared to the MCU, this DCEU is also visually inferior to its rivals. Both of them use CGI a lot, but when the MCU is very neat and pleasing to the eye, the DCEU is not that cool. I love the flashback part of Steppenwolf’s early battle with Earth’s protective forces consisting of the Amazons, the Atlanteans, the Spartans (from the movie 300 , which was also directed by Zack Snyder), as well as the well-known DC superhero alliance. Part of the battle in a monument against a character is also fun. But at the last battle I didn’t really like it, it didn’t go as strong as Batman v Superman or Man of Steel, either visually or how serious the stakes in the battle are.
Fortunately, after the slightly sloppy early part ended and the Justice League began to gather, the film had started to be fun to enjoy. This time also marks the DCEU’s shift to a lighter tone than before and a lot of jokes that work too (not like SS crispy). The interactions of these six Justice League superheroes liven up the atmosphere and change the tone of DC films to be more fun . All of this is inseparable from the inclusion of Joss Whedon (who is also the director of 2 films The Avengers) who replaced Zack Snyder who was having personal problems. Look at all the scenes that Whedon once rather than Snyder, though Whedon just entered in the 15-20% and limited to just rewrite and reshoot (Joss Whedon did not get credit as a director and only got credit as a screenwriter with Chris Terrio)
Barry Allen/The Flash (Ezra Miller), which I thought would be annoying, turned out to be not annoying at all and was actually fun. Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Jason Momoa) since his appearance in the trailer already seems to be fierce and a bit awkward . Victor Stone/Cyborg (Ray Fisher) is however limited in expression and emotion because he is basically a half-human-half-cyborg. Don’t ask how Diana Prince/Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) who has been the center of attention since her appearance in Batman v Superman, is here with all her charm and wisdom to balance and become a “mother” among these superheroes who are still considered childish .
Unfortunately here Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck) his role as a member of the Justice League is just like a child who is invited to play with their friends because he is rich and has luxury goods. When on the battlefield he could not do much without his equipment, in fact he was easily lifted and thrown like a jacket thrown on a mattress. There is no sign that he is a martial arts expert who has been keeping Gotham city safe for 20 years. As a technology expert and ” the greatest detective on Earth” was taken over by Cyborg. Unlike Clark Kent/Superman (Henry Cavill) who underwent an extraordinary transformation from Man of Steel or BvS depressive, this time Superman has truly become a hero who is a symbol of hope and can be used as a role model.
Apart from the early part that can’t be told well and the presence of Steppenwolf who is only a one story arc baddie and his appearance is only as a medium to collect Justice League, but this insert of humor and lighter tone gives little hope for the next installations of DCEU films. Hopefully, film lovers will soon get 2 universes that are both cool, the audience will also be happy.
