It’s a heavy burden for the director and scriptwriter, Rian Johnson, to take the Star Wars narrative where it is now and in the future. The hopes and optimism of the fans for The Last Jedi were even higher when a few weeks before the film’s release, LucasFilm trusted Rian Johnson to create a new trilogy later after Episode IX. This is quite surprising, especially considering that in the past year LucasFilm has often dismantled the directors of Star Wars films. It seems that Rian Johnson’s vision in The Last Jedi is so special that LucasFilm executives immediately trusted him to develop a new trilogy.
Sure enough, Rian Johnson gave a very special dish in The Last Jedi . Not only still has the important elements that make Star Wars loved and has a high fan base, but also provides a new nuance and narrative. There is still The Force , dark side vs light side , Rebellion vs First Order carnage venom 2, as well as space and lightsaber battlesepic ones; while still keeping some surprises that can make diehard fans feel the ups and downs of emotions like a rollercoaster. The biggest surprise lies at the end of the film, not only surprising because it was unexpected but also surprising because it feels so cool (after I watched it for the second time and realized that the clues were actually displayed, it was obvious how great Rian Johnson managed it).
The Last Jedi does have many of the elements found in Empire Strikes Back , but it’s not quite as close to The Force Awakens which uses the exact same formula as A New Hope . The Last Jedi raises a theme of ambiguity about success and failure, good and bad, to the superiority of the Jedi which Luke Skywalker considers only romanticized. Several philosophical presentations through venom 2 cuando se estrena dialogues arranged well by Rian Johnson provide a way for further exploration in the future. While the theme feels so heavy and dark, don’t forget to include humor that provokes laughter and keeps the pace The 152-minute film – the longest for a Star Wars film – is well preserved.
Visual The Last Jedi also took part in making this film a special dish. Starting from their fantasy creatures and Supreme Leader Snoke that looks real (whether it’s using dolls like the original trilogy or using very slick CGI) to the beautiful appearance of the setting.the story of time in space and during the final battle on Planet Crait is very artistic. Even the lightsaber battles, although not as beautiful as the “lightsaber dance” in the trilogy prequel (it must be admitted that the prequel is superior in this regard), but in terms of intensity and tension, it is much better. This is inseparable from the choreography and shooting that is made in such a way as to produce high intensity and also looks epic. Not to forget the magnificent scoring treats from John Williams, which have almost never been absent since Star Wars was released in 1977, the exception being Rogue One last year.
The character development is also better than The Force Awakens . The trio of Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe (Oscar Isaac), and Finn (John Boyega) get their own moments and affirm that they deserve to continue their legacy. Jar-Jar Binksthe original trio. Likewise, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren/Ben Solo whose characters are so complex. Even BB-8 is not only an adorable droid that is intended only for merchandise sales, but also has a cool scene. There are additional interesting characters from the figures of Rose (Kelly Marie Tran), Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern) and Benicio Del Torro. Even so, there are still shortcomings in exploring the figures of Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), and also Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o).
Not to forget, this film provides special treatment for the main characters in the original film, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and General Leia (Carrie Fisher). Here the audience is given Luke who is so fragile but does not eliminate the fact that he is a Jedi Master, and this time develops a sense of humor. Every scene of General Leia is also felt as a special tribute to the late Carrie Fisher, especially when one key scene is so special and quite thrilling for fans. One of the old characters also appeared unexpectedly.
If The Force Awakens is a nostalgia for old fans and a gateway to the world of Star Wars for new audiences, then The Last Jedi is a new hope for this trilogy going forward (the same is not true for the spin-off ). With a duration of 152 minutes, the audience was given a spectacular treat by saving some surprises that made the duration less pronounced. It’s not too perfect in some parts, but some of these minor flaws do not cover the beauty of this film.
