After six years on from its last film “On Stranger Tides” in 2011, Pirates of the Caribbean is back with a new adventure titled “Dead Men No Tales”. How will Jack Sparrow’s next journey be?

The story begins with the determination of Henry Turner, the son of Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner who wants to free his father from the curse of Davy Jones. There is only one way, and that is to find the Poseidon Trident. Henry also looks for the figure of Jack Sparrow, because he believes that only Jack Sparrow is able to lead him to find the Poseidon Trident. But the search for Jack Sparrow did not go smoothly, when Henry served as a crew member of the British Royal Navy, he met with Capt. Salazar, an old enemy of Jack Sparrow who holds a grudge against Jack. The search for Poseidon Trident was not only carried out by Henry and Jack Sparrow, their search was also assisted by a scientist who was being hunted for being accused of being a witch, Karina Smyth.

Captain Salazar is a legendary pirate hunter in the Caribbean Sea. He is the captain of the Silent Mary as well as one of the top brass in the Spanish Royal Navy. For years Salazar became a legend because he managed to eradicate pirates in the Caribbean, until one day he met a young pirate named Jack Sparrow. The first meeting as well as the last time it made Capt. Salazar holds a grudge against Jack Sparrow.

At that time the Silent Mary was surrounded by 10 pirate ships. Despite being outnumbered, Capt. Salazar managed to destroy almost all the pirates. Realizing that there were still some pirates who survived, Salazar ordered his troops to shoot them and gave no mercy even though the pirates had actually raised the white flag. At the same time, it turned out that there was still one ship flying its flag, it was a ship filled with a young pirate named Jack Sparrow. Jack provoked Salazar so Salazar brought Silent Marry to chase Jack’s Ship according to what he had planned. Jack led Silent Marry to the area called “Devil’s Triangle”. At the last moment Jack managed to change the course of his ship, while Salazar did not have time to maneuver and continued sailing into the Devil’s Triangle. Silent Mary was destroyed in the Devil’s Triangle and killed the entire crew. But the destruction of Silent Mary is not the end, Devil’s Triangle holds a curse so Captain Salazar and his crew continue to take revenge against Jack Sparrow and wait until he is able to be free from Devil’s Triangle.

Dead Man Tell No Tales (2017) is a reunion event between Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightley who previously played together in the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films. Although the presence of Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightley is minimal, their presence again makes my imagination about what will be brought in the next POtC sequel to go crazy. Plus I missed the After Credits Scene (it appeared far at the end) which he said gave a hint of what happened next.

As usual, Johnny Depp’s performance as Jack Sparrow did not disappoint, it seems that after playing in the previous 4 POtC films, Jack Sparrow’s character has become attached to him. Johnny Depp’s appearance was also balanced by the “evil” character, Captain Salazar, played by Spanish actor, Javier Bardem.

As previously stated, Captain Salazar is a pirate hunter from the Spanish Royal Navy. At some point in this film, my logic is made to work hard on who is good and who is bad, pirate or pirate exterminator? But never mind. In addition to the reunion of the three actors above, another surprising thing is the presence of a member of the legendary band The Beatles, Paul McCartney as a cameo in this film.

Slightly Disappointed
In this latest sequel, POtC introduces two new roles, namely Henry Turner, played by Brenton Thwaites and Karina Smyth, played by Kaya Scodelario. Unfortunately, their appearance looks like they haven’t found the right chemistry, the impression isn’t going anywhere. As if repeating the initial patterns that we used to know the trio of Jack Sparrow – Will Turner – Elizabeth Swann to Jack Sparrow – Henry Turner – Karina Smyth, but for me it failed. The love story between Henry and Karina seems forced to happen and feels rushed. Watching this film is like reading the same book over and over again, if you like the book there won’t be a problem, but of course the enthusiasm will decrease a little and eventually get bored because you can predict where the story will lead.

The duration of this film is only 129 minutes, relatively short when compared to previous POtC films, but the story feels very solid. Like labor-intensive workers, the audience’s brain is forced to absorb a lot of information, even in some parts we will be forced to swallow it raw until we don’t have time to ask why. If you are more patient, maybe the story can be more profound and memorable.

One more thing that is quite disturbing for me is the problem of adjusting appearance or make-up. Jack, Will and Elizabeth do not seem to have experienced significant aging. Even though the time span from the 3rd to the 5th sequel should be more than the age of a Henry Turner in the film. This means that at least they are more than 18 years old and these three people still look young.

It would be a lie if I said “Dead Men Tell No Tales” is not an entertaining film. Although overall not as good as the first three films, this film is still very worthy to be enjoyed.
