Director of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Leonardo thinks referee Danny Makkelie made a mistake. He felt that Karim Benzema should have committed a foul on Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The incident occurred when PSG were leading 1-0 over Real Madrid in the last 16 of the 2021/2022 Champions League at the Santiago Bernabeu, Thursday (10/3/2022) early morning
Real Madrid managed to score the equalizer in the 61st minute through Karim Benzema ‘s flick following a blunder from Donnarumma.
In the process, Benzema had time to nudge Donnarumma who was controlling the ball with his foot in the PSG penalty box. The Italian goalkeeper got a bit of a push that sent him bouncing.
At that time, Donnarumma also wanted to pass the ball to his teammate, Achraf Hakimi. However, due to physical contact and the ball hit Benzema’s feet, the direction of the bait changed.
The ball was then seized by Vinicius who provided a sweet pass to Karim Benzema right in front of the PSG goal.
“It was a clear violation by Benzema against Donnarumma. It was a clear mistake,” Leonardo said, quoted from Canal Plus via Twitter , Fabrizio Romano .
“However, we don’t need to look for excuses now.
Talk about Mauricio Pochettino’s future – Due to Karim Benzema ‘s equalizer , the situation turned around for PSG. The team nicknamed Les Parisiens was unable to withstand the Real Madrid bombardment.
Benzema scored two more goals and scored a hattric in the 76th and 78th minutes to beat PSG 3-1 and advance to the Champions League quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate.
Despite his dramatic exit from the Champions League, Leonardo ensured that the future of PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino was still safe.
“We have to stay together. This is not the time to think about his future,” said Leonardo, this time adapted from RMC via Twitter Fabrizio Romano.
