Sonic the Hedgehog: I grew up in the 1990s when the buddy movie theme was booming in Hollywood. The definition of a buddy movie or movie from the Encyclopedia of movie themes, settings and series is a movie in which the main characters are two individuals of the same sex but with different personalities through an adventure that requires them to work together.

Gampangnya contoh buddy movie 1980-an sampai 1990-an : 48 HRS (1982); Renegades (1986); Lethal Weapon (1987); The Hidden (1987); Collision Course (1987); The Wild Pair (1987); Red Heat (1988); Midnight Run (1988); Tango & Cash (1989); The Rookie (1990); Another 48 HRS (1990); Pure Luck (¡99¡); The Last Boy Scout (1991); National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1 (1993); Money Train (1995); Bad Boys (1995); Bulletproof (1996); The Glimmer Man (1996); Gridlock’d (1997); Rush Hour (1998); Chill Factor (1999).

I watch these movies laser disc or vcd. Of course it was rented because at that time there were not many pirated vcd tapes.

The last Buddy movie I watched was Sonic the Hedgehog. When I saw the trailer, I thought it was an ordinary animated-live action mix. I was surprised when I watched it. Because I didn’t think Hollywood was still producing buddy movies.

Richard B. Armstrong and Mary Willems Armstrong in the Encyclopedia of movie explain that initially the main character of a buddy movie is not always the same gender. But usually when the main character is a girl and a boy they will fall in love and the movie becomes a romantic adventure.

Sonic – For example, The 39 Steps (1935) is a romantic adventure because the relationship between fugitives Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll eventually blossoms into romance.

My favorite Buddy movie is the Rush Hour series, starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker and The Heat, played by Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. Most of McCarthy’s comedies are buddy movies. Such as Identity Thief, Tammy, Spy, Life of the Party, Super Intelligence and Thunder Force.

McCarthy is a genius comedy actor who can create chemistry with anyone. He almost always manages to avoid the pitfalls of the theme or sub-genre of buddy movies which, if produced carelessly, will turn out tacky, dry and boring.

Simple looking buddy movies can be very expensive to produce. If mixed carelessly, a buddy movie can become a low-budget movie or what is known as a b movie. What’s worse is if the production cost is expensive but it looks like a B movie.

I think Hollywood has stopped producing buddy movies like Sonic the Hedgehoog. Because the successful buddy movies in the last two or three years are the ones shown at movie festivals such as Olivia Wilde’s Booskmart or Rachel Lee Goldenberg’s Unpregnant.

In my initial reflection (because maybe I’ll change my mind) I thought this movie was a throwback. Because Kevin Hart who usually starred in buddy movies like Ride Along with Ice Cube, Get Hard with Will Ferrell, Jumanji and Central Intelligence with Dwayne Johnson has now turned to the satirical dark-drama True Story.

After all, last year Hollywood released An American Pickle which I think is one of the best buddy movies of all time. When Seth Roger befriended himself.

But then Hollywood released Sonic the Hedgehoog starring Jim Carrey. The genius behind The Truman Show, Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

I can’t say Sonic is so bad. But for me it was more appropriate to be released in the early 2000s than 2020. I watched it because the sequel was in the news after its premiere in Russia was postponed.

On the basis of that news I watched the first one. I wonder why Hollywood is still producing movies like this and making sequels?
